Thousands of Irvine home owners will show their support for Autism Speaks during the 8th annual Orange County Walk Now at The Irvine Great Park on October 13, 2012. There is no fee to participate in the event, however, walkers are encouraged to fundraise, and many form teams who come up with creative ways of raising money for this great cause.
Every 11 minutes a child is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Autism is a developmental disorder that appears in the first three years of life, and affects the brain’s normal development of social and communication skills. The disease affect more boys than girls, and genetic factors do seem to play a role. Many parents notice something different about their child by about 18 months of age. Children with autism generally have trouble with pretend play, social interactions, and verbal and non-verbal communication. Other signs include an oversensitivity to sights, sounds, touches, smells and tastes, unusual distress when routines are changed, repeated body movements, and unusual attachment to objects.
Autism Speaks’ goal is to increasing awareness and to fund research into the causes, prevention and treatments for autism. They also help advocate for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. Walk Now for Autism Speaks is a fun-filled, family friendly event that is popular in the Irvine community. It is the organization’s single best source of fundraising for vital research.
